Seeing the sign in screen

Dear Friends,

Thank you for creating Kolibri with free access. I installed version 15, and all ran fine and even imported a channel. Then I did a Systems Restore, and the shortcut was removed. So, I deleted all and uploaded version 17. When I click the shortcut, a panel says that the application is running, but I see no log in screen. I’ve set it for starting when starting the computer, and I can see it is trying to start, but no sign up screen ever appears. When I type localhost and 127.0.0.1:8080 the prompt says it can’t open. How can I get it to function properly again? Thanks for your help.

Hello @P_Robison , welcome to the Kolibri Community Forum! :slightly_smiling_face:

It is not surprising that the desktop shortcut was not there after the System Restore, as it probably rolled the system back prior to the original Kolibri installation. Which Windows version are you using?

The best way to proceed would be to send us the Kolibri log files, you can find the instructions on how to locate them in our user guide. Compress the logs/ folder in a ZIP file and send it to support@learningequality.org.

Dear Redina,

I could not find the log in file (I’ll need more explicit instructions to succeed; I even got a MS agent to help, and all he did was uninstall and reinstall, and the problem persisted). But I did find this in the event viewer:

Does this help? I’m sorry that I can’t be more helpful to you.

Warmly, PR

From what I can see by googling the file ucrtbase.dll, it seems to be somewhat frequent Windows error, and has nothing to do with Kolibri.

One successful resolution in this thread points to the steps Using System File Checker in Windows. Can you try to following these, and once finished, install Kolibri again? Let us know if it worked!

Dear Radina,

Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately, I followed all the instructions in File Checker and it did not change anything after another install. No login in is visible, and the prompt still is saying the application is running. When I type 127.0.0.1:8080 in the browser, the prompt says it can’t load. Any other suggestions?

With kindest regards, PR

Unfortunately, since the issue you are experiencing is not related to Kolibri, but to your operating system, there is not much more we can do to support. There are several threads about it on the Microsoft forums, and all the users seem to have been able to resolve it eventually.

Make sure to install all the OS recommended updates, even those from your device manufacturer, and re-try the steps explained here. Pay attention to type the commands exactly as recommended.

Dear Radina,

Thanks for your advice. Hopefully, I too can eventually figure it out. Keep up the good work!

With kindest regards,

Paul Robison

Dear Radina,

I tried a whole new restart. Got an error message, which is the log you asked for earlier:

A screen shows the next to the last line. Is this the DLL problem, or do I need another version of Python, or is something else going on? When I’ve tried to uninstall the python program (3.6.8), I get a prompt saying it can’t be found. Anyway, I thought I’d check to see if this gave you any more clues. Thanks again for your help. If this sheds no more new light, you need not respond.

With kindest regards,

Paul Robison

Ok, let’s try and see if by updating your Python installation we can make some progress.

If you installed Kolibri 0.17, you should have this folder on your computer:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Kolibri\python-setup

Double click the python-3.8.10-amd64.exe file and wait for the installation to complete. If Kolibri is still not able to start afterwards, you may try to reinstall it too, so it can pick up the updated Python. Let us know if there are any changes!

Dear Radina,

Thanks for your continued help. I uninstalled ver. 17 with the hope of just waiting until the next upgrade appears. At your suggestion I tried to reinstall it. When the window to install came up, here’s a prompt that showed up:
Something went wrong during Kolibri setup.

Additional information can be found in the log file [which I can send if you wish, but I think it might be like the last log sent].
Error details: File: C:\Python36\Script\pip.exe was not found.
Not in the same folder as Kolibri, but on the C drive is a folder called Python36. When I click on the exe, I get a command screen. But I don’t know what to type there. I look forward to learning more.

With kindest regards,
Paul Robison

Dear Radina,

I downloaded 17.2 and got the same results as above. Here’s the log:
