Offline Channel Creation (without Kolibri Studio)?

I have been using Kolibri for several months and am very impressed with it, especially for playing videos and the interactive content. I would like to begin creating new channels with our own content. After some searching, it appears that the online Kolibri Studio website is the intended method of creating channels. I saw from discussions several years ago that this was the only method of creating channels, but I was wondering if that has since changed or if there are plans to allow for offline creation of new channels/content (presumably, without having to use Kolibri Studio)?

It is very expensive for teachers in my community to have to upload/download large files over the internet. Plus, the network can be very flaky and not always available. I’m also concerned about the requirement of all channel files to be hosted on the Kolibri Studio servers. It seems like there is a total file size limit for each account because of this? If we could create channels locally, we would not have these issues.

Thank you for your time!

Hi @Lakster, welcome to the LE community forum, and thanks for your interest in Kolibri.

To answer your question directly, unfortunately, Kolibri Studio remains the only way to create channels and upload content to Kolibri.

Offline content upload to Kolibri is a clear need in our ecosystem, and we have a feature request tracking this goal here. However, while we acknowledge this is a high-priority need for many in our community, at this moment, we don’t have the internal capacity to commit to a specific release date for this. It is a significant technical undertaking, and we are working through our roadmap as resources allow.

Although the problem of uploading large files to Studio over unreliable connections is something that will remain latent for an indefinite time, you can mitigate the limited space problem by requesting more space on the Settings > Storage page in Studio. Hope this can help a bit if you ever hit the storage limit.

Thank you for being part of the Kolibri community and for your patience as we work to make the platform more accessible to everyone.

Alex.
