I have downloaded and installed Kolibri on 13 Amazon Fire HD8 (12th generation, Fire OS 8.3.3.6) Tablets. I had to side load Google store and also downloaded Google Chrome afterwards. I then installed Kolibri from the Google store. I also added a 128GB micro SD card and formatted it as internal storage on the tablet. I am using each tablet as offline/standalone kolibri devices, but with the capability to access kolibri on a Raspberry Pi 4b or Laptop via wifi hotspot for group lessons.
Downloading Google store was quite straightforward. I followed directions I saw online. I am a novice so anyone should be able to do same. Likewise downloading Chrome.
Downloading and setting up Kolibri was easy. I just followed the directions. Where I hit some little snags was in downloading channels. First, the downloads were quite slow. I have AT&T Gigabit fiber internet. I could not download channels all at once. I had to download them individually. For channels like Khan Academy, I had to download it in sections, otherwise it tended to freeze. I have eventually downloaded about 18 channels into each of the tablets, but it has taken me about 3 weeks to do so. Note that I performed the downloads whenever I had spare time.
One of the issues I am experiencing on the Amazon tablets is that some of the channel downloads are stuck at different states. One of the tablets has ten tasks downloads stuck at either ‘waiting’ or ‘canceling’. They have been stuck in this state for over a week. I have stopped and force stopped Kolibri, but nothing changed. I shutdown the tablet and restarted and nothing changed. Do you have suggestions of other things I could try?
Another issue I have encountered on the Amazon tablet is that sometimes it deletes Chrome and I then have to reinstall. I have used the Amazon Silk Browser lately to access the raspberry pi kolibri hotspot. Earlier I could not use it. If the tablet undergoes a major system update, I am afraid what might happen to the kolibri app and data.
I have also installed Kolibri on a 5 generic android tablets - Ecopad c5 (android version 15) and that was smooth. Download was much faster and so far no major issues to report. I have also set them up similar to the Amazon tablets.
These android devices will be used in Nigeria in an area where internet services will be very limited. They will be used primarily without access to the internet. I am a technical novice with these devices. I was able to do what I have done because I have good access to the internet and therefore help. My hope is that the end users in Nigeria will be able to reach you directly via this community for any help they will need.
