Advice on Best Practices for Using Kolibri in Remote Schools

Hey everyone!

I am currently involved in setting up Kolibri in a few remote schools by integrating Generative AI, and I would love some advice or suggestions from those with experience. The schools have limited access to the internet managed by Gen AI, so we’re trying to make the most of offline resources while still ensuring students get a quality education. I was Googling for the same I came across these resources/articles Best Practices for new Deployments however they are good but I want to learn more from community members.

For those who’ve used Kolibri in similar environments, do you have any tips on the best content channels to prioritize? Also, how do you typically handle hardware challenges in places where access to devices and reliable electricity is an issue? Any success stories or lessons learned would be super helpful!

Looking forward to hearing from this awesome community.

Thanks in advance!

Hello @jacksonharris

It’s great to hear about your plan to set up Kolibri in remote schools and use Generative AI. I’d be happy to share some tips that might help

For curriculum-aligned resources, consider using Khan Academy, the CK-12, or TESSA. Including teacher training modules can also help teachers make the most of Kolibri. To ensure that these resources are fully aligned to the curriculum of the country you are working in, it is recommended to use the Kolibri Studio tool to rearrange these existing resources to follow the curriculum.

When dealing with hardware challenges, low-power devices like Raspberry Pi servers are affordable and energy-efficient, making them good local Kolibri servers. Choosing tablets and laptops with long battery life and durability can also be helpful in these settings. For managing internet access, you can use offline content updates by using external drives to update content periodically. Scheduling updates when internet access is available, even if it’s occasional, can be effective. Setting up local networks allows devices to connect without needing internet access.

Feel free to reach out if you have specific questions or need more detailed advice on any part of your deployment. Wishing you all the best!
